Two years ago, I took a step away from blogging. I had made a habit of regularly blogging for about a decade. Beginning in 2013 with my personal blog, Money, Markets, and Misperception, I used the platform as a space to explore ideas. Exhuberance and a general lack of awareness of what I did not know were a useful combination at the time. My interests moved from monetary theory and monetary history to pure theory of economy and society. And during this time, more advanced analytical and computational methods grew of increasing interest to me. Whereas I had developed domain expertise in monetary economics in the years preceding 2013, by 2017, my interests had grown beyond my capacity to constructively express them to the public. My interest in maintaining a personal blog waned as a result. (I have copied over the old blog without alteration for the sake of continuity).
A second wind of motivation filled my sails when I was invited to contribute to the Sound Money Project at the American Institute for Economic Research. Focusing on monetary policy, theory, and history carried the benefit of my always having something to say on the topic. However, after contributing for 5 years to SMP, it was time for exploration driven purely by interest. As time passes, I find myself exceedingly grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to public facing discussions in monetary theory and policy. The regular editorials and scholarly research motivated by my time at the Sound Money Project helped me to develop insights that I might otherwise have ignored.
Again, I find myself wanting for a template to develop and share ideas before they are in publishable form. For the 2024-2025 school year, I am fortunate to be a visiting fellow at Duke University's Center for the History of Political Economy. My time here so far has been an opportunity to explore the intersection of diverse interests that have accumulated across my career, especially in the last 2 years. What better way to pursue my work here than to share insights as I read through the history of ideas from their source! Interests that you can expect to be covered in approaching weeks include commentary on cognition, artificial intelligence, and monetary policy.
Welcome to a new intellectual adventure. Welcome to InCognito.
